On Saturday, the West Vigo Girls’ tennis team traveled to Edgewood to play two back-to back WIC matches against Edgewood and Indian Creek.
After triumphing early over Edgewood, the Lady Vikings took to the courts against Indian Creek. At 2 and 3 singles, E. Easton and A. Lasecki ousted their opponents, earning two points for their team. At number 1 singles, a grueling ball-for-ball battle was happening between Senior K. Whitford and Freshman L. Foster of Indian Creek. The first set was settled with a tie-breaker going to Whitford. During Whitford’s second set, all other matches had finished, so all eyes were on court one. The two teams and spectators watched as two high school tennis players fought for every point with volleys at the net, aggressive returns, and exhausting back-and-forth rallies that can only be witnessed during matches seen on television.
The second set ended at 6-6 just as the first did, so a tiebreaker was played. It was during this time, that Whitford began playing with an ankle injury. The second set went to Foster after winning the second tie-breaker, the the already-fatigued girls had to play a third set. After a quick medical break for Whitford, the girls began their third set. Ball for ball, point for point, game for game…each girl knew that their team depended on them, and each was hungry for the team-win.
The third set ended with Foster beating Whitford 5-7 and the win going to Indian Creek. Whitford played one of the best matches of her career on Saturday and her coaches and teammates are extremely proud of her effort.
