Mr. Gary Oxford attended West Vigo from 1986-1990 where he participated in cross country, track, basketball, and soccer. Gary earned 13 varsity letters and was awarded the McMillian Award, Outstanding Male Athlete, and Outstanding Male his senior year.
As a four year letter winner in cross country, Gary was ranked in the top seven for 3 years and #1 one year. He was the 1990 Sectional Champion in cross country. Gary was a two year letter winner in basketball, a member of the 1990 Sectional Champion Basketball team, and was named to the All-County Defensive Team in 1990. Earning four letters in track, Gary ran the 800m, 1600m, 3200m, and the 4×400. Gary was the 1990 Sectional Champion of the 800m, and he won the 3200 at the 9th Grade County Track Meet. Gary was a three-year letter winner in soccer. He led his team in goals and assists in 1988, 1989, and 1990. He was also voted Most Outstanding Soccer Player for two years. Gary and his brother walked a petition around to get enough signatures to have a soccer team approved for West Vigo. The first year of Vigo County soccer was Gary’s sophomore year.
Gary completed two years of college at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology where he was a member of the soccer team. He was named Rookie of the Year for the 1990 season and led the team in assists. He tied the record for most assists in one game. In his second year, he led the team in goals and assists. Gary finished his degree at Indiana State University.
Gary has been employed at Bemis Company, Inc. for close to ten years as a Sr. Process Engineer. He is currently living in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Gary’s fondest athletic memory was all of the fans rushing the court after winning the basketball Sectionals and taking limos to Regionals through West Terre Haute. Main street was lined with cheering people from our community.
