              2016 Inductee

Mr. Mike Miller graduated from West Vigo High School in 1968. Mike participated in football, cross country, basketball, and baseball while at West Vigo.  During Mike’s sophomore year he sustained a serious football injury which sidelined him for his sophomore basketball and junior football seasons. Mike decided rather than just sit around he would run cross country his junior year in which he lettered. He also lettered in basketball that same year. As a senior Mike lettered in football and was chosen to the All-County team and the WIC All-Conference team as a wide receiver where he led the team in scoring. During his senior basketball season, Mike was chosen as the team captain. He broke the school record for rebounds in a single game with 29, and also the record for the season total rebounds with 355 averaging 16.9 per game. Both of the records still stand today 48 years later. Mike was chosen to the All-Sectional team by WTHI radio and received the team MVP award.  In addition, Mike was awarded the 1968 Outstanding Senior Athlete Award for West Vigo High School.

Looking back to my high school days, I realize how fortunate I was to have had such great coaches as Bob Burton, Bob Clements, Jim Hargis, and Jack Crombie. Those men, in my eyes, were great role models and excellent coaches. I wish every athlete today were as lucky as I was to have been coached by those gentlemen.

After graduation Mike attended Indiana State University for two years before starting a four year apprenticeship with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Mike worked in the electrical trade until 1985 when he decided to return to ISU to finish his degree. During this time, Mike coached the boys’ 7th and 8th grade basketball teams at WVMS, he was also the girls JV softball coach for two years. In 1989, Mike became the boys’ freshman basketball coach for one year before becoming the boys’ basketball varsity assistant. In 1997, Mike moved over to the girls’ basketball program and was the JV coach for two years. In 1998, Mike became the girls’ varsity coach.

In 1999 Mike became the athletic director at West Vigo High School after the retirement of 30 year athletic director, Jim Mann. During Mike’s time as the athletic director West Vigo accomplished 7 County Championships, 5 Big Four Championships, 23 WIC Championships, 12 Sectional Championships, 4 Regional, 1 Semi-State Championship, 1 State Runner-up, and 2 McMillian Award Winners.

Mike has always felt that he was very blessed to work with so many outstanding coaches.  At West Vigo High School during his 13 years as AD the coaches were not only trying to win games, but were always trying to develop young people into productive adults.

In 2005, Mike became the first AD in Vigo County to become a Certified Athletic Administrator. This award is presented by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. Mike also earned a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from ISU in addition to earning his Administrator’s License. Upon his retirement he was awarded the Legacy of Commitment from WTHI and T.H. Savings Bank.

Mike’s social activities include: Past Master of New Goshen/West Terre Haute Masonic Lodge, Past Thrice Potent Master of the Scottish Rite of Terre Haute, past member of the Zoriah Shrine Drum and Bugle Corps, past member of Phi Delta Kappa, and United Way committee volunteer. Mike currently sits on the Bedino Sports Complex Board of Directors and also the Valley Professional Community Health Center and finance committee. Mike now enjoys his retirement by watching his grandchildren participate in sports and traveling with his Wife of 46 years Kathy and volunteering at his church.
